FREE PLASTIC SURGERY CAMP.

ORGANISED BY

ROTARY CLUB OF JALNA.
(DIST 3130)

PROLOUGE:

The Rotarians world wide are always helping the community through various ways by looking beyond own self and serving beyond borders, then let it be Tsunami waves destroying some part of the Asian Continent or the district team serving the needy people of African Continent.

We all at Rotary always think of improving the image of the Rotary through out the world in the society which helps by lending the hand which celebrates Rotary by forming the bridges of friendship.

Rotary Club of Jalna is known for its eye work since 1965, where more than 50000 cataract surgeries were conducted during the last more than 35 years.

Plastic surgery camps organized by government and non-government organizations are a common feature. Most of the camps are organized for a day or two, where justice in real sense is not done to the needy and poor patients particularly patients with complicated burn adhesions requiring lengthy operations and cleft lip and palate cases. The cost of the surgery in most of the cases exceeds Rs.20,000/- which for an average middle class family has remained an unfulfilled dream and in the current context in India is a surgery beyond the reach of a common man as the expertise are available in major cities only.

Keeping this in mind our club understood and felt the need and were trying to help the poor and needy and conducted the Free Plastic Surgery Camp for a period of fourteen days and this is the fourth free plastic surgery camp in a row. The camp organized by the Rotary Club of Jalna was not one of the same type as that organized by government or non-government organization as it was organized for a period of twelve days. Justice in real sense was done to the needy and poor patients particularly patients with complicated burn adhesions requiring lengthy operations and cleft lip and palate cases.

The Free Plastic Surgery Camp was started in the year 2003-2004 in association with the Interplast Mission, Germany and Rotary Club of Bombay Mid Town. The idea was conceived in October 2003 when we were visited by Rtn Dr. Anil Tibrewala a plastic surgeon of the Hinduja Hospital, Bombay, who visited on behalf of the Interplast Mission, Germany and looked into the minutest details of the infrastructure available at Jalna Mission Hospital, it was more as the mock drill in terms of conduction of the camp, where he looked into the sterilization facility, theaters, wards, equipments, material and human resources, logistics and other contingencies. He was left speechless and had no suggestions to make for the infra structure.

This year the only difference was that the Rotary International was also involved as Matching Grant is to be received under the Matching Grant No. 61567. The Rotary Club of Concord Township Rotary Dist 6540 USA was the matching club. Generally it used to be the Interplast Mission, Germany which sponsored the doctors from Germany but this year it was the Rotary Club of Hattingen, Rotary Dist 1900 Germany which has sponsored the team of doctors and nurses from Germany. As usual the Rotary Club of Bombay Midtown took lots of efforts in transporting the luggage of the doctors and the doctors in person.

The total contributions of various Rotary Clubs and Rotary Districts under the Matching Grant No. 61567 is as follows:

Us $ Rs.
Rotary Club of Jalna. 2,000 94,000
Rotary Dist. 3130 India. 5,000 2,35,000

THE TEAM FROM GERMANY.

MEDIA COVERAGE AND PUBLICITY:

NEWS PAPER COVERAGE:

Press conference of press correspondents was organized which was attended by around 40 correspondents. The details of the free plastic surgery camp were given to them with a request to publicise the same widely. The whole camp was covered by the local newspapers with photographs pre operative and postoperative photographs. The media all the while during the camp gave top priority to the camp by allotting central location in the newspapers.

LOCAL TV CHANNEL:

The free plastic surgery camp was given top priority even by the Local TV Channel. The reporting of the free plastic surgery camp was an eminent feature every day.

CORRESPONDENCE:

Letters of information were sent to all the patients who were registered in the earlier camps but could not be treated then due to paucity of time.

EXECUTION:

The preliminary scrutiny camp was conducted in the month of January, 2007 and had screened more than 300 cases and selected about the same number which were hard core cases in dire need of plastic surgery more than cosmetic surgery. The selected cases were done with all the preliminary blood and radiological investigations. The final screening was done by the members of the German team on 17th February, 2007 and the final list of 140 patients who were to undergo the operation during this years camp was finalized. The OPD was conducted for one day wherein the German Team selected the final patients whom they planned to operate. After screening the patients were divided into two groups of congenital anomalies and burn scars. Two different halls with necessary arrangements for the examination of the patients were provided for the German Doctors. After pre operative examinations the patients were admitted according to their respective operation schedule. Thanks to the successful media coverage and publicity both through the press and by “the patients who underwent operations in the earlier camps” the inflow of large patients was there who had come from various places far and near to Jalna.

HOSPITAL ARRANGEMENTS:

OPERATION THEATERS:

Two operation theaters with the necessary anesthesia and surgical equipments and equipments brought along with the German Team and trained personnel were ready to receive the patients and the German Doctors. EVEN THE MEMBERS OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF JALNA FOLLOWED STRICT DISINFECTION NORMS. This resulted in non-infection of the patients and non-use of postoperative antibiotics for the patients.

WARDS:

Entire floor of the female ward of the Jalna Mission Hospital was made available for the operated patients of the said camp. A minimum of four Rotarians were always present during the entire period of the camp to assist the patients, German Doctors and hospital staff. Free breakfast, lunch and dinner were provided to the operated patients till their discharge and the members of Inner Wheel Club and Rotaract Club of Jalna managed the distribution of the same.

INAUGURAL FUNCTION:

A short and brief inaugural function with the members of the Rotary Club of Bombay Midtown and Rotary Club of Jalna, members of the German team and a patient Ms Vidya Rathor who underwent multiple operations in the earlier years, was well attended by all the patients was concluded in a span of thirty minutes. This half an hour program was very much appreciated by the members of the German Team as nominal time was spent on the formalities and more time was made available for the needy patients and also information of the camp was given in local language to the patients and their relatives. Looking at the response of the camp Dr. Gerhard K Schlosser. assured the patients that the team would be coming again to operate the patients who were not accommodated at this camp.

THE INAUGURAL FUNCTION.

THE OUT PATIENTS SELECTION:

The two sections for the general plastics and cleft lip and cleft pallet were working simultaneously in two adjacent OPD rooms which were separated during our first checkup camp. The cases were examined by the German surgeons and anesthetists and were helped by two Rotarians as interpreters.

THE SURGICAL PROCEDURES:

The maxilofacial surgeons used to have a list of seven or eight cases every day while the general plastic surgeons used to have five to seven cases depending on the time required. Not a single minute the members of the German team were interested in wasting and were always enthusiastic in utilizing each and every moment of the day. Whenever they felt that an additional patient could be accommodated the attending Rotarian was requested to call a patient who was registered but was in the waiting list. They were always interested in operating maximum number of needy patients.

THE EVENING PROTOCOL:

With the concept of “ATITHI DEVO BHAVA” we all at the Rotary Club of Jalna have always felt that someone coming from so far a distance should be given the best possible maximum protocol. So two of our members were always present with the team members during their evening pleasure time and dinner.

CONCLUDING FUNCTION:

After the hectic work for thirteen days by the German Team the members of the Innerwheel Club of Jalna arranged a cultural entertainment programme at the lawns of Rumkmani Gardens on 1st March 2007, which was enjoyed by the members of the German Team, the visiting German Journalist, the Rotary Volenteers from Rotary Club of Concord Township and the members of the Rotary Club of Jalna. The members of the German Team, the nursing and class IV staff of the Jalna Mission Hospital and one and all who took an active part in the camp were felicitated. Cash awards and certificates were given to the nursing and class IV staff of the Jalna Mission Hospital.

At the cultural programme the members of the German Team, the German Journalist and the Rotary Volunteers were welcomed with floral showers, which was a treasurable novelty for all the members of the German Team.

REACTIONS OF THE PATIENTS:

The patients who were successfully operated were overwhelmed by the services provided by the Team of German Doctors and they all appreciated ROTARY, the members of the German Team and Rotary Club of Jalna.

THE REACTIONS OF THE PRESS:

BENEFITS OF THE FREE PLASTIC SURGERY CAMP:

TO THE SOCIETY:

1. Most neglected and unfortunate young aged patients were given lease of new and active life.

2. Children with congenital anomalies will forget the inferiority complex and lead a normal life with normal speech.

3. Cleft lip and pallet is not a sin or a curse and it is curable anomaly.

4. Costly, time consuming and most skillful surgery facility was offered to the poor and needy patients.

5. Many superstitious notions about the congenital anomalies were overruled due to the successful operations. This camp also acted as an educative programme of negations of misbeliefs.

6. Rtn Dr. Anil Tibrewala member of the Rotary Club of Bombay Midtown and a famous plastic surgeon from the Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai who was also a member of the team expressed that around Rs.75.00 Lakhs is given to the society in kind in the form of the operations conducted at the Free Plastic Surgery Camp.

7. The visits of the local doctors and volunteers during all the days of the camp was a regular feature and they were richer in knowledge of plastic surgery and impressed by the human approach of the German Team.

TO THE CLUB:

1. Thirteen days long camp increased the cohesiveness of the members, Rotary Brotherhood, sense of family and continued interest in humanitarian projects. More that 97% members of Rotary Club of Jalna attended

2. The confidence of the members increased and it proved that we can plan and execute meticulously a mega project.

3. It gave us a new vision and confidence of working with an International Non Rotary Voluntary Orginsation Inter Plast Mission, Germany.

4. The importance of proper classification of the membership as per the norms laid down by the Rotary International was realized when every possible specialized help was found in the club itself right from publicity to the operations.

5. The members of the Rotary Club, Inner Wheel Club and Rotaract Club of Jalna had a good family relationship and understanding amongst themselves and also with the members of the German Team.

6. The image of Rotary was enhanced in the community as whole.

7. The members of the Rotary Club personally got emotional satisfaction of serving the needy people.

TO THE GERMAN TEAM:

1. The members of the German Team were all leading and reputed doctors from Germany who during their vacations do philanthropic work through the Interplast Mission Germany, were visiting Jalna and they understood rural India and the medical facilities available.

2. The joint family culture, which is visible in India, only was a surprising thing for all the members of the German Team.

3. The members of the German Team will never forget the Indian Culture and hospitality, which was made available in a small town like Jalna.

4. The complicated nature of the multiple contractures was a sort of challenge for all the members of the German Team, which made them assure the general public that they will be holding a similar camp again in Jalna.

BYE BYE:

Ten members of the Rotary Club of Jalna went to Aurangabd to see them off at the airport. All the members of the German Team were moved with the hospitality and our traditional way of honoring the guests and they all promised to come again and hold a similar camp in the years to come.
